The Central
Currently up in Hoi An with Nhu. Hoi An is an enchanting little riverside town in central Vietnam. A few hundred years ago, it was a major trading port, inhabited by Chinese, Japanese, and French traders, among others, and you can still see most of these influences quite clearly - it helps that the old town is a UNESCO World Heritage site, so the old town remains as it was (architecturally speaking) back then.

The one down side, of course, is that it's still anything goes within the buildings themselves, which means that almost all of these beautiful old buidings are now either tourist shops or restaurants, which does kill the authenticity a touch, but such things are to be expected.

Mostly just wandered around the town today and yesterday, but tomorrow and Saturday we'll probably be renting a motorbike to check out the surrounding area, including the ancient Cham site of My Son, and China Beach, up on the coast by Da Nang, which is supposed to be really nice.

Way behind on posting photos, but will hopefully get these ones up soon after we're back in Saigon :)

Hoi An reminded me of a little fishing village that had been made over to look like a Disney'd version of... a little fishing village.

Be really careful on the road between Da Nang and Hoi An, it's 27 kilometres of trucks playing chicken with you.

I don't think you can go to the actual China Beach, from what I recall my friend in Da Nang telling me -- something about leftover debris and ordnance. But you can go to the one nearby. Regardless of which beach you visit, they're incredibly beautiful. When I visited three years ago, they were just starting to build hotels and such along the beach road, I'd imagine it's much more built up by now. Being in Da Nang as a foreigner is like being a rock star, as most foreigners don't stop in Da Nang, they just land at the airport and get on the bus for Hoi An.

There's a great little bakery in Da Nang called "Bread of Life" over on 12 Le Hong Phoung street. I hope they're still there. Excellent food, great breakfasts.

There's a new beach road between the two now... very empty, no trucks. Went halfway up it today - to the Marble Mountains, which were awesome - and will do the full drive to Da Nang tomorrow.
