I finally got my first box sent over! Being Vietnam, they weren't going to give it to me unless I paid their tax first, but after a stern talking-to from the HK branch of FedEx, they finally charged that to the sender's account like they were supposed to.

The mostly contained books. Some fiction, mostly stuff I've really been meaning to read, and also my Chinese classics (Strange Tales from the Liaozhai Studio and Journey to the West), and some non-fiction, mostly stuff about the Silk Road, Buddha relics, etc. Also my photocopy of the incredibly difficult to find Pirates of the South China Coast, which should be an even more interesting read now that I'm in Vietnam, as the rise of organised piracy in South China owes its existence to a Vietnamese civil war.

Also, my copy of The Adam and Joe Book, which I'd forgotten was in there, but am so grateful to get back again, one miniature bronze Buddha statue, a few salvaged Star Wars figures, and two Buddhist wall hangings,

I have a few more boxes still to be sent - some DVDs, a few clothes (including my hiking boots, I believe), possibly Orinoco the Womble and maybe King Louie the orang-utan. Everything else (that is, everything from the boxes not marked "express") I decided to abandon, since being away from my stuff for so long has given me a bit of a Buddhist non-attachment perspective about things (though obviously not a complete one.) However, after making that decision, I backtracked a little bit, and had to write another note asking that my Dragonball/Buffy/Angel/Firefly DVDs be preserved too. Especially the Dragonball. Took me so long to collect all them to begin with.

The rest, however, is going, and there may be a few things I regret losing later, as I remember what they are, but I think overall it's for the best. I can build a new Empire of Stuff later, when I feel ready again.

I didn't know that about the rise of piracy there!

It's great about getting the box, very cool stuff! but it's also good to let things go. My most difficult one so far has been all of my Dick Francis books, except for six. But I'm glad they're gone, along with so many others.

I don't know about Buddhism, but I feel so much lighter and less, I don't know, *committed*, somehow. Plus, I like the idea that they all may find their way to someone who will love reading them and might not have found them any other way than my letting them go. Ah, a bit of secular humanism, I guess, how strange.

Anyway, I'm glad your box got there all right, but don't you hate jumping through hoops like that? Uck. People should just do the right thing in the first place.

Ah, the freedom of letting go. Pretty peachy, eh?

Did my package ever show up? :(

I haven't been in for the past few days, but to be honest I'm starting to lose hope. Although the package from my sister still hasn't turned up either, and the last time she sent me something it took ridiculously long... I'm just not going to think about it unless I actually see something on my desk. (although I hope it does get here eventually)

Should I keep sending you stuff, or do you want me to hold it?
